Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Notary Public?

A Texas Notary Public is an official authorized by the state to witness signatures, administer oaths, and certify documents to help prevent fraud.

What types of documents can be notarized?

Documents such as affidavits, acknowledgments, powers of attorney, contracts, deeds, and loan documents can be notarized. Wills and certain legal documents requiring legal advice cannot be notarized.

Proper ID - What do I need to bring to the signing appointment?

Proper identification is required for any notarial service that requires verification of signature.

Acceptable ID Documents - A Notary may accept, as satisfactory evidence of identity, a current identification card or other document issued by the federal government or any state government that contains the photograph and signature of the bearer. Among acceptable ID's are: state driver's licenses and nondriver's ID cards, U.S. passports, U.S. military ID cards and permanent resident cards issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Can a notary provide legal advice?

No. Notaries are not attorneys and cannot give legal advice or draft documents.

What is the difference between an acknowledgment and a jurat?

An acknowledgment confirms the signer signed voluntarily, while a jurat requires the signer to swear or affirm the truthfulness of the document's contents.

How do I schedule a notarization?

You can contact me by phone, email, or through my website to arrange a convenient time and location.

Which notary act is right for me?

Sometimes the notarial wording is not found on the document you need notarized. Such as handwritten or private documents. When this happens, the signer should ask receiving agency-what type of notarization they need. The signer may also seek advice from an attorney or choose the act yourself. (For signatures, choices include an acknowledgement, which proves you signed the document or a Jurat the signer swears/affirms what they signed is true.

What if I don't have a valid ID?

If you cannot provide a valid government-issued ID, the notary may be able to identify you using a credible witness, who must swear under oath that they know you.

Can a notary notarize a document that is not completely filled out?

No, a notary cannot notarize a document that is incomplete.

How much does a notarization cost?

In Texas, the fee is $10 per notarized signature, as set by state law. If you request mobile notary service, a separate travel fee may apply, which will be discussed and agreed upon before your appointment.
